Mexico STP Achieves Significant Savings with PISTA® 360™ Over Proposed Conventional Velocity Channel Grit Removal System

In the Sonora capital city of Hermosillo (Mexico) commenced plans for construction of a large new wastewater treatment plant that would handle and treat 90 percent of the flow generated by the area’s 1,000,000 residents. Project plans specified a conventional velocity channel grit removal system to protect the plant’s multiple extended aeration treatment basins. Project plans originally called for six velocity channel trains (each with associated pump, controls and concentrator).

But after further consideration of all available technologies, designers ultimately specified and installed the Smith & Loveless hydraulic forced vortex PISTA® Grit Removal System because of its greatly increased removal efficiency, reduced concrete and associated construction costs, energy usage and O&M requirements. Designers discovered that the same needs could be met with only five forced vortex PISTA® grit chambers (and associated equipment). This meant one less chamber, pump, and concentrator would be needed for the complete grit removal arrangement– offering significant savings in both upfront purchase and long-term operational costs.
