Petrochem Plant Meets Limits with FAST®

CASE STUDY: Treatment Systems

When managing wastewater for one of the world’s largest petrochemical and plastics complexes, the engineering margins for error are non-existent. Formosa Plastics Corporation’s sprawling facility in Point Comfort, Texas required a sanitary wastewater treatment strategy that could support major site growth while meeting exceptionally stringent effluent limits.

Covering nearly 2,500 acres along the Texas Gulf Coast, the massive industrial complex includes more than 20 production units across multiple chemical and plastics divisions. With operations spread across such a large footprint, routing sanitary wastewater to one centralized treatment point would create major logistical and piping challenges.

To address these needs, Smith & Loveless designed and delivered five distributed S&L FAST® Treatment Systems placed strategically throughout the facility. With plant capacities ranging from 6,500 gpd to 120,000 gpd, the systems help manage variable sanitary flows while achieving high-quality effluent of 5–10 mg/L BOD and 5–10 mg/L TSS.
